MONTICELLO – Cory Frerk led the way for Albert Lea in the ninth-grade individual state wrestling tournament at Monticello last weekend.
Frerk won the 140-pound championship, going 4-0 for the tournament and finishing the freshman season 19-0.
Zach Hansen had his season end on a sour note despite a fourth-place finish at 95 pounds. Leading in the semifinals, Hansen dislocated his elbow with 11 seconds remaining. His opponent went on to win the title. Hansen finished 14-4.
Also placing fourth were Taylor Ignaszewski at 112 and Michael Honeycutt at 160. Ignaszewski finished 13-3. Honeycutt 13-5.
Competing but not placing at state for Albert Lea were Matt Morris, 105; Brandon Mellang, 125; Alex Paul, 145; and Ben Berhow, 152.
&uot;We’re looking forward to next year with only two ninth-graders on the tournament team,&uot; said coach Mike Hansen. &uot;These seventh and eighth-graders stepped it up all year and did some quality wrestling.&uot;
