ALDEN – The last time the Alden-Conger boys’ basketball team met Lyle/Austin Pacelli, the Knights held on to win by a point as their opponents missed two free throws with less than a second on the clock.
This time the Knights won by making their own free throws.
Scott Martinson, Josh Wills and Brett Penning all hit free throws down the stretch as the Knights held off visiting Lyle/Pacelli 65-60 in a nonconference game at Alden Monday night.
&uot; The guys played for four quarters and it showed,&uot; said Alden-Conger coach Dave Bosma, whose team snapped a 10-game skid while improving its record to 3-13.
It was close all the way, with the Knights down 17-16 after one quarter and up 32-30 at halftime. It was 41-41 after three quarters.
Penning poured in a season-high 28 points for the Knights. He also had 14 rebounds. Ben Faugstad had 16 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocked shots, Josh Wills 11 points and seven assists. Also scoring were Tyler Hintz with five, Martinson three and Colin Wittmer two.
Andy Boisjolle scored 28 for Lyle/Pacelli.
The difference, according to Bosma, was the Knights’ front-court combination of Faugstad and Penning.
The Knights return to conference play Friday at Bethlehem Academy.
