GLENVILLE – Winning their final six games of the year, including five on the road, was just one of many highlights for the 2001-2002 Glenville-Emmons B-squad girls’ basketball team.

&uot;We had set a theme of, ‘Mission Possible,’ which was winning our last six games, and we accomplished the goal,&uot; said second-year coach Tom Jones, who guided the team to a 13-6 overall record that included a Southeast Conference West Division mark of 8-2.

The six-game streak included victories over Alden-Conger 45-27, Lanesboro 41-40 in overtime, LyIe-Pacelli 43-37, LeRoy-Ostrander 46-20, Grand Meadow 43-28 and Spring Grove 38-28.

&uot;The girls and I agree that the win over Spring Grove was the season highlight,&uot; said Jones. &uot;We sat on the bus for two and a half hours and arrived just under 30 minutes before tipoff, and our warmup time was cut to 15 minutes. The girls got themselves mentally prepared and held a very good Spring Grove team to seven points in the first half. Our post players did an awesome job of holding their 6-foot center to only six points.&uot;

Jones noted that what made this team unique and successful was every night someone different stepped up to make a huge contribution.

&uot;It might have been a three-pointer at the end of a quarter, a fast-break left-handed lay-up, or coming in off the bench to get seven steals in a game,&uot; said Jones.

The squad averaged 39.5 points per game while allowing an average of 33.5, shooting 32 percent from the field and making 30 three-point field goals.

&uot;The girls know what they need to work on in the off-season – shooting, free throws and ball handing,&uot; said Jones. &uot;If they spend time in their second season – the summer season – working on these, they will continue to find success at the next level.&uot;

Team members included sophomores Becky Ericksen, Ellen Hansen, Megan Bjorklund and Leann Chessmore, and freshmen Samantha Stadheim, Rhonda Watson, Stephanie Peterson, Amanda Weiss, Mallory Paulsen, Miranda Kral. Jessica Williamson and Amanda Epland. The student manager was Jessica Boyum.

For Ericksen, Hansen and Bjorklund, it was a successful two years of B-squad ball, winning 27 games and losing only 10.

The eight freshmen were 2-2 on the year, splitting games with Southland, defeating Mabel-Canton and losing to Albert Lea.
