MINNEAPOLIS – Based on seed times, Albert Lea was in line for five consolation finalists in the Class A state boys’ swimming and diving meet.
The Tigers got four.
All three relays and one individual placed in the top 16 in Friday’s preliminary round at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, qualifying for Saturday’s consolation finals.
The Tigers’ top place Friday was the 200-yard freestyle relay, which finished three places better than its seed time, taking 10th in 1:32.87. Members of the relay were Ethan Berg, Ben Lindeman, Ben Matheson and Mitch Johnson.
The 400 freestyle relay of Lindeman, Berg, Colton Jensen and Johnson was 13th. It was seeded ninth.
Berg, Ben Schreiber, Justin Elwood and Ryan Lowe qualified 16th in the 200 medley relay.
Schreiber was the lone individual to make the consolation finals, qualifying 15th in the 100 breaststroke.
Johnson, seeded 10th in the 100 freestyle, missed the consolation finals by two places, taking 18th. He was 25th in the 200 freestyle, where he was also seeded 10th.
Other preliminary places for the Tigers: Lindeman, 26th, 200 freestyle and 22nd, 500 freestyle; Jensen, 20th, 500 freestyle; Matheson, 20th, 100 breast.
