NORTHFIELD – According to coach Jeff Rayman, defense made the difference for the Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball team.
The offense wasn’t bad either.
The Wolverines held Bethany Academy of St. Paul to 16 first-half points and made six of 10 three-point shots en route to a 61-48 victory in a Section 1A West tournament game at St. Olaf College in Northfield Friday night.
The Wolverines, seeded second out of 10 teams in the tournament, improved their record to 18-4 while Bethany ended its season 12-14.
&uot;I’m just happy we’re playing good basketball yet,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;I’m very proud to be a part of these kids and their season.&uot;
He was particularly proud of their defense Friday night.
&uot;Except for a little lapse in the third quarter, our defense was real strong,&uot; said the coach. &uot;Our match-up zone has been working real well.&uot;
The Wolverines led 18-10, 27-16 and 43-36 at the breaks.
Paul Kleven led the Wolverines with 24 points despite sitting out most of the fourth quarter with four fouls. He made all four of his three-point attempts.
Chase Rayman helped pick up the slack in the third quarter, when he scored nine of his 12 points. He added four rebounds and four assists.
Nick Flatness grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, scoring six points.
Mitch Meier played well coming off the bench, according to Coach Rayman, contributing six points. Zach Adams also scored six. Richie Mathis had five points, Maurice Chessmore two.
The win advanced the Wolverines to the semifinals against Bethlehem Academy Monday at 8 p.m. at the Rochester Mayo Civic Center.
