An old lawmaker from Albert Lea was back in the state capitol Tuesday.

Rudolph Hanson, a 98-year-old former Republican Senator, received an honor from legislators in St. Paul.

Hanson was a senator between 1955 and 1970 representing Freeborn and Fillmore counties.

Hanson is a former teacher, lawyer, county attorney and World War II veteran. During his years in the Senate, Hanson was credited with working to strengthen local government control, improve Minnesota’s court and criminal justice system, and install sensible state debt guidelines.

Hanson was introduced by Rep. Dan Dorman, R-Albert Lea, and Sen. Grace Schwab, R-Albert Lea, to his successors in both the House and Senate with standing ovations.

Following the Senate floor session, Schwab hosted a reception in her forerunner’s honor.

&uot;It was such an honor to have former Senator Hanson join us today,&uot; said Schwab. &uot;He holds a unique, historic perspective on the issues and needs facing our state and region right now. I think everyone who had the chance to talk to him learned a little something.&uot;
