A series of issues in connection with a new judicial center will be discussed by the county commissioners during their board meeting Tuesday.

First, they will award a bid for the Western Grocer Building demolition project.

The bids were entered last week. The county administration, which has scrutinized the proposals with assistance from architects and the county attorney’s office, will recommend one as a winner. If approved by the commissioners, the company will start the demolition as early as May 10. According to the proposed contract, the project will be completed no later than Aug. 31.

Second, the board will decide whether the county will hire a construction management firm to administer the new judicial center construction.

County officials have studied pros and cons to having a construction management firm during a previous board meeting and workshop. If approved, the firm would participate in the project starting with the final design phase.

Third, the board will review the need to have more detailed analysis on the design of the new facility. Commissioner Dan Belshan has been claiming that the number of future jail inmates could be suppressed by widening the usage of the Electronic Home Monitoring system. Commissioner Glen Mathiason also supports the idea of having another estimate done by a different architectural firm.

Cooperation with the City of Albert Lea to address the vacation of Pearl Street and a parking space problem will also be discussed. In addition, a request by the Minnesota Department of Corrections to lease space in the new judicial center is also on the agenda.
