Martha A. Nelson, 73, Zumbrota

Funeral services for Martha A. Nelson, age 73, of Zumbrota are Tuesday, April 23, at 2 p.m. at United Redeemer Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with The Rev. Wayne Radke and The Rev. Darin Easler officiating. Interment is in Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation was Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home – Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and one hour prior to the service at the church.
She died on Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Charter House in Rochester.
Martha Arlene Dahl was born on Jan. 14, 1929 in Ellendale, to Carl J. & Hilda M. (nee Olson) Dahl. She grew up in the Albert Lea area and graduated from Freeborn High School in 1947. She attended Minneapolis Business College and graduated in 1948. She worked as a bookkeeper in Minneapolis until she married Melroy L. Nelson on Feb. 25, 1951, at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church in rural Albert Lea. (Melroy died on Jan. 9, 2002). They made their home on the Nelson family farm. Martha was a member of United Redeemer Lutheran Church and WELCA, Culinary Coordinator for the Goodhue County Fair for many years and a volunteer for the Zumbrota Area Hospice. She enjoyed playing bridge, baking, traveling and was an avid sports fan.
Martha is survived by three daughters, LeAnn (Jon) Stee of Zumbrota, Cheryl Nelson (Geoff Lehy) of Carlsbad, Calif., and Mary (Brad) Birmingham of Zumbrota; one son, Neil (Tina) Nelson of Morrow, Ohio; five grandchildren, Hilde and Jonathan Stee, Catherine Birmingham, and Angela and Matthew Nelson; one sister, Margaret (Harold) Mouw of Albert Lea; three brothers, Omar (Donna) Dahl of Albert Lea, Chester (Jewell) Dahl of Utah, and John (Marvyl) Dahl of Albert Lea; and foster sister, Selma (Henry) Bakken of Albert Lea.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melroy (Jan. 9, 2002), her parents, and one brother, Arthur Dahl.
Casketbearers are: Jonathan Stee, Robert Basten, Barry Erath, Rich Rajacich, Christopher Dahl, David Dahl, Dean Dahl and Michael Dahl. Honorary bearers and ushers are: Tim and Tyler McAthie, Josh Hinsch, Josh Ronningen, Andy Grimsrud and Jake Raasch.
The family suggests memorials to Mayo Foundation, American Cancer Society, or United Redeemer Lutheran Church, Zumbrota.
