ROCHESTER &045; If someone would have told the Glenville-Emmons baseball coach that his team would go 1-1 on day one of the Section 1A tournament, he would have taken it.

Well, he got it.

The Wolverines split Saturday at Hudson Field in Rochester, keeping them alive in the double-elimination tournament but leaving them three consecutive wins away from state.

“I said at the beginning you could take the four teams (in the section tournament), throw them in a hat and on any given day any team could win,” said Toulouse. “If you would have said we’d be 1-1 after Saturday, I would have been happy. Overall, I was pleased with how our kids played.”

The Wolverines’ 8-1 triumph over Elgin-Millville raised their record to 19-8, setting a new school record for wins in a season. It also improved Mitch Meier’s pitching record to 10-0 as the junior lefty threw an eight-hitter, striking out eight and not allowing a walk.

The Wolverines totaled 16 hits, led by Jay Wadding at 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI and Chase Rayman at 3-for-3 with two doubles and a sacrifice. Richie Mathis was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Matt Learn 2-for-3 with a double, Isaiah Parry 2-for-3 with one RBI, Paul Kleven 2-for-5. Meier and Nick Flatness added one hit apiece.

“It was probably our best overall game of the year,” said Toulouse. “We had no errors, 16 hits, great pitching. Everything kind of fell in to place for us. Everyone who played contributed.”

The Wolverines managed only four hits in a 5-2 loss to Chatfield, one each by Parry, Wadding, Rayman and Jake Hansen. Mathis pitched a complete game, giving up four earned runs on nine hits; he walked two and struck out six.

The Wolverines face Elgin-Millville again at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Hudson Field, with the winner meeting Chatfield

at 7:30. If Chatfield loses the late game, those teams will play Wednesday for the section championship and a spot in the state tournament.
