Dave Hutchins, a 12-year township supervisor in Albert Lea Township and current resident of far eastern Freeborn County, will challenge Second District Commissioner Dan Belshan in this fall’s elections.

Hutchins, who was elected to three terms in Albert Lea Township, moved to his home north of Myrtle in 1995. He’s a lifelong county resident and is the service manager at the Motor Inn Company of Albert Lea.

He said now is a good time to run for county board because there’s a lot going on in the county.

&uot;I think there’s a lot of issues the citizens of Freeborn County should be involved with,&uot; he said.

Hutchins is the first person registering to run against incumbent Belshan of Glenville, who was elected four years ago.

The other open county board seat, in the fourth district, now held by board chairman Dave Mullenbach, is also being sought by former county administrator Truman Thrond.

Today is the last day for candidates to file for local offices. For offices where more than two people have filed, a primary will be held Sept. 10. The general election is Nov. 5.
