Two Democrats who hope to unseat Freeborn County Republicans have made their campaigns for office official &045; but thanks to a clerical error, one of them was labeled a Republican by the Secretary of State’s office.

Dan Sparks, a banker from Austin who got the DFL nomination to run against Sen. Grace Schwab, R-Albert Lea, was mistakenly listed as a Republican when he filed for the District 27 senate district Tuesday. A state Web site that lists candidates for state offices still had Sparks incorrectly marked a Republican as late as this morning.

Allan Halvorsen, an Albert Lea attorney who is running against Rep. Dan Dorman, R-Albert Lea, for the District 27A house seat, also filed his candidacy Wednesday. Halvorsen received the DFL endorsement at the district 27 convention.

The only other announced challenger for the legislative seats is Terry Kelley, a former television news producer from Austin. He had not filed his candidacy with the Secretary of State as of Wednesday.

In local elections, Albert Lea’s sixth-ward incumbent made his candidacy for reelection official. Al &uot;Minnow&uot; Brooks, who is completing his first term on the city council, filed for reelection Wednesday. No challengers have stepped forward in the sixth ward.

Filing for federal, state, county and city offices continues through July 16. Those filing for city offices must do so at city hall, and those who want to run for county offices can register at the Freeborn County Courthouse.
