Weekend Planner: Alden and Ellendale festivals lead weekend events

Highlights of this weekend’s events include two area town festivals and the second weekend of Minnesota Festival Theatre’s &uot;Guys and Dolls.&uot; Both Ellendale and Alden will celebrate their towns’ long histories with parades and street dances.
Here is a list of events scheduled for this weekend:
Friday, July 19:
– The Pelican Breeze will hold a Friday night pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Call (507) 383-2630.
– Ellendale Days events: From 6-9 p.m. the Ellendale Lions Club dunk tank will be open, at 6 p.m. the Fireman’s Pedal Tractor Pull starts off at the Community Center and from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Ellendale Liquors will be sponsoring a street dance featuring &uot;Storm Bros.&uot;
– Morin Lake Days events: from 1:30-3 p.m. the Lions Club fishing contest will take place on Morin Lake, at 5-7:30 p.m. Alden 4-H Club will sponsor a barbecue at North Park with meals costing $5 a plate, at 7:30 p.m. a tribute to local World War II veterans will be held at North Park, and an exhibition softball game will follow the tribute.
– MFT’s production of &uot;Guys and Dolls&uot; starts at 7:30 p.m. Individual tickets are on sale for $15, contact the box office at 377-4371 to reserve seats.
Saturday, July 20:
– The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market will be held in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street beginning at 9 a.m.
– The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise at 2 p.m.
– Ellendale Days events: Main Street sidewalk sales start at 8 a.m., an all-day T-ball tournament will be held at the Ellendale school ball fields, and the Memories Car Club car show is set to take place on the city bus garage lawn. From 5-7 p.m. the Ellendale Commercial Club is sponsoring a pork chop supper at the Community Center, the Lion’s dunk tank will be open from 6-9 p.m., Ellendale Liquors street dance featuring &uot;Storm Bros.&uot; takes place from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m., and from 9 p.m. -12 a.m. the Ellendale Fireman’s youth dance takes place at the Community Center.
– Morin Lake Days events: Softball and volleyball tournaments will be held at North Park all day, at 8 a.m.-3 p.m. a car show will be held at Chrome Classics, at 9 a.m. The annual Fun Run 10k, three-mile and one-mile races will start in the Hemmingsen’s Transfer parking lot. Registration for the event starts at 8 a.m. At 1 p.m. Fugleskudning (&uot;The Great Dane Shoot&uot;), a shooting contest, begins on North Star Road. The entry fee is $10, and among the prizes to be awarded is a 12-gauge shotgun. The Morin Lake Days parade begins at 7 p.m. Following the parade Redeemer Lutheran Church will hold a freedom concert with songs by the community choir and a slide show featuring the parade grand marshals. Later in the evening a street dance will be held behind the Alden American Legion. The band &uot;Circuit Breakers&uot; is set to perform; admission is $2 at the gate.

Sunday, July 21:
– Ellendale Days events: the Lions Club pancake breakfast will take place from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Community Center and the Parade starts at 1 p.m.
– Morin Lake Days events: Softball and Volleyball tournaments will be held at North Park all day, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. the Alden Lions Club will hold a pancake breakfast at Morin Lake Park. Cost is $4 for adults, children 6-12 are $2, the breakfast is free to preschoolers. A 9:30 a.m. community church service will be held by the Morin Lake boat landing.
– The Memories Band will present its weekly free program of live music beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Edgewater Park bandshell. The band’s two hour set list includes polkas, waltzes and other tunes from the &uot;big band&uot; era. The program is sponsored by the Albert Lea Federation of Musicians Local 567 and the city of Albert Lea.
– The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise at 2 p.m.
