An 81-year-old Albert Lea woman died Monday night after a vehicle struck her as she tried to cross Broadway Avenue, police said.

According to witnesses, the woman, Carol Constance Springer, stepped into traffic around 9:30 p.m. Monday near KFC on South Broadway. Several cars were parked along the road, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, said Albert Lea Assistant Police Chief Dwaine Winkels. She was not crossing at an intersection.

She was struck by a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Peter Carl Nelson of Glenville. Winkels said police don’t suspect him of any wrongdoing.
