Eveyln B. Head, 93, Albert Lea

A memorial service for Evelyn B. Head of Thorne Crest North will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at Grace Lutheran Church Chapel, Albert Lea. The Rev. John Henriksen will officiate. Inurnment will be at Graceland Cemetery. There will be no reviewal. Bonnerup Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn, age 93, died on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1909, to Lars and Anna (Hansen) Rasmussen. She was married to Charles R. Head on Nov. 2, 1929. They lived in Albert Lea and vicinity until moving to Eau Claire, Wis., in 1951 and to Upland, Calif., in 1952. They returned to Albert Lea in 1984 and lived in the Thorne Crest Apartments.

She began elementary school in Frost and continued in Albert Lea when her family moved there in 1919. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1926 and from Normal Training in 1927. She took classes at Mankato State Teachers College summers, and earned her B.A. Degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, After moving to California, she earned her M.A. Degree from the Claremont Graduate University. She did postgraduate work at Whittier College and at Universities in Los Angeles, Riverside and Irvine.

Mrs. Head was an educator for 39 years. She taught in Freeborn County for 22 years, and in Upland, Calif., for 17 years. She taught in the Upland Elementary and Sierra Vista buildings before she became the principal of Foothill Knolls School, She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and PiLambda Theta and had life memberships in several educational organizations.

Until her later years, she had been an active member in Lutheran Churches working with the Sunday School, Luther League, Altar Guilds, Bible Circles, and Church Women. After moving back to Albert Lea, she became a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Evelyn felt blessed to have good parents, a good marriage, good friends, and a career of going to school, teaching children, working with adults, and being a homemaker.

She is survived by her niece, Karen Locken of Minot, N.D.; and grand-niece, Kristin Locken of Madison, Wis.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brother-in-law, Vernon Bjoro, in 1982; husband, Charles Head, in 1996; and sister, Hazel Bjoro, in 1998.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donor’s choice.
