After serving for ten years, Carol Haun has decided not to run for reelection for the Albert Lea school board.
&uot;I’ve had my opportunity to learn about educational issues and to deal with them,&uot; Haun said. &uot;I think it’s time for someone else to get the opportunity to serve on the board.&uot;
Haun encouraged parents of students to file for candidacy for school board, but also said that everyone should get involved with public offices at some point.
The district has opened filing for candidates for Haun’s seat and three other seats on the board. Three of the school board openings are for full, four-year terms. Other than Haun’s, the terms that will come to an end this year are those of Tom Eaton and Marjorie Thorn, both of whom have already filed for re-election. One newcomer, Jolinda Schreiber, has filed for candidacy as well.
The other seat open is for the two years that remain for the seat of Darlene Greibrok-Hahn, who stepped down after two years on the board. The two-year position is open for filing at this point as well.
Filing in the Albert Lea School District began on Aug. 26 and will be open until Sept. 10. Candidates will need to bring $2 and an affidavit for candidacy to the district office to file.
In school board elections, the top vote-getters, regardless of where they live in the district, are elected. This year, with three four-year terms open, the top three finishers who run for four-year terms will get seats. The top finisher in the race for the two-year term will get that seat. There is no primary election for school-board candidates.
