James Lewis Helland, 58, Emmons

Funeral services for James L. Helland, age 58, of Emmons will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Mansfield Lutheran Church. The Rev. Don Rose will officiate. Interment will be in the Mansfield Cemetery. Visitation is 4 – 7 p.m. today at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Jim died Friday, at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

James Lewis Helland was born June 6, 1944, to Clarence L. and Marie L. (Beck) Helland in Albert Lea. He was confirmed at Mansfield Lutheran Church in 1958. Jim graduated from Alden-Conger High School in 1962. He attended Austin Vo-Tech in the Tool & Die program. On April 17, 1965, Jim was united in marriage to Anita R. Halvorsen at Lime Creek Lutheran Church. He was a farmer all his life. Jim was a lifelong member of Mansfield Lutheran Church and had served on the church council and in other organizations. He had been a member of the Mansfield Township Board since 1980. Jim enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, playing softball, and camping.

Survivors include his wife Anita of Emmons; sons: Curtis and wife Marie and their children Jacob and Danielle of rural Alden, Jason and wife Shari and their children Anjelia and Jenna of rural Delavan, and Matthew of rural Monroe, Iowa; mother Marie Helland of St. John’s Lutheran Home; sister Janet M. Olson of Albert Lea; and father and mother-in-law Bud and Alma Halvorsen of Emmons; sisters-in-law Verlaine Halvorsen and Joan Morgan and husband Dennis; brothers-in-law Daryl Halvorsen and wife Ginny, Steven Halvorsen and wife Cindy, and Allan Halvorsen and wife Nancy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his father Clarence in 1978.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to donor’s choice.
