The Rev. Norman A. Sundwall, age 81, of Faribault, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Faribault, with Dr. Mark A. Noren officiating. Interment will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault.

Visitation will be today from 3-6 p.m. at Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault and also for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Norman A. was born April 22, 1921, to Andrew and Ruth (Carlson) Sundwall, at Govan, Saskatchewan, Canada where his parents had homesteaded from Cokato, Minn. He attended the community’s Sundwall School and received instruction from the Radio College of Canada. He farmed for a few years with his father and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force for service in World War II. He served with Western Air Command and North Western Air Command in the later phase of the war with Japan and as such in air traffic control for the United States supplies to the USSR. Following the war, he received an associate in arts from Regina College of the University of Saskatchewan, a bachelor of arts from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and a B.D. from McMaster’s Divinity School and Bethel Seminary (1952).

He was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1952 and served pastorates in Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska and Illinois. In 1954, he married Ardis E. Hanson of Clarks Grove. As a minister, he also directed Church World Service programs in Texas for a number of years as a related staff person to the Texas Conference of Churches. His ministry also included fund raising for Southern Black Colleges in the Missouri and Illinois South Conferences of the United Church of Christ. He retired in 1986 from the same community in which he had been ordained. He and his wife retired to a new lakeside home at Faribault to be near family. In retirement, he became an Interim Ministry Specialist with the American Baptist Churches, USA, and served as such in Mapleton, Owatonna, St. Paul and Edina, Minn. He had been an active member of Kiwanis in three communities and served as a president. He was an active member of the local Cannon/Wells Lake Association and served as its secretary-treasurer for several years. He was also an active member of the Ministerial Associations in the communities in which he served as pastor.

He is survived by his wife, Ardis, of Faribault; a son, Marcus (and Diana) Sundwall of Faribault, a daughter, Joan (and Randy) Paulson of Franklin, Tenn.; six grandchildren; sisters, Edna (and Paul)

Thurm of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, Lorene (and Keith) Nixon of Chilliwack, British Columbia, and Aldoris (and Don) Thompson of Kelowna, British Columbia; sisters-in-law, Marvel (and William) Beiser of Alden, Marilyn (and Frank) Cuden of Albert Lea, a brother-in-law, David A. (and LeAnn) Hanson of Ellendale and mother-in-law, Mary E. Hanson of Albert Lea; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States and Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Derek Joseph Sundwall and father-in-law, Harry F. Hanson.
