BLAINE &045; The season came to an end for the Albert Lea U-15 girls’ soccer team with a 2-1 loss to West Side in Game 3 of the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association Classic 3 state tournament.
It was the second 2-1 setback for the locals at the National Sports Center in Blaine. They shut out Westonka 2-0.
Coach Cliff Wuerflein said the team turned in another strong effort against West Side.
&uot;We had a good game,&uot; said Wuerflein. &uot;The girls played well. They did all they could. We came on strong at the end and almost tied it, but a tie wouldn’t have gotten us into the finals. We needed to win.&uot;
Staci Armstrong scored Albert Lea’s goal.
The rest of the team included Tessa Christensen, Acacia Clarambeau, Mary Cook, Carly Habana, Jody Hestness, Katie Kjos, Alyssa Nelson, Ashlee Pence, Kelly Schreiber, Chelsey Schumaker, Christine Staloch, Heidi Stegenga and Brooke Wuerflein.
The U-15 girls finished the season with a record of 8-2-3. The team was undefeated in regular-season district play but finished one point behind LaCrosse, which will face West Wide in Saturday’s state championship game.
