Virgil LeRoy Underwood, 76, Albert Lea

The memorial service for Virgil LeRoy Underwood of 723 Belmont, Albert Lea, will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. Curtis Zieske will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Military Honors will be accorded.

Virgil died Aug. 17 at his home. He was 76 years old.

Virgil was born on March 13, 1926 to Arthur and Ruth (Monson) Underwood in Forest City, Iowa. He attended Forest City, Iowa school. He was drafted into the service in May 1944. He spent 20 years, one month and one day in the United States Navy. Virgil received the following campaign ribbons: American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Okinawa Invasion Ribbon, Philipine Liberation Ribbon, Navy Occupation Service Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal – five stars.

Virgil married Gloria Wilson on Feb. 19, 1946. Four children were born from this marriage. Virgil and Gloria were divorced in 1972. He lived in Albert Lea and worked at Streater for one year. He then moved to Lancaster, Penn. working at the Host Farm Resort Motel, Royal House Restaurant and General Sutter Inn.

Virgil moved back to Albert Lea in 1977 and lived with his parents until their deaths. He worked at Piggly Wiggly, Dudley’s IGA and El’s Fine Foods, retiring in 1988.

Virgil married Diane Baker on June 3, 1989 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea and enjoyed 13 very happy years with her.

Virgil is survived by his wife Diane. Her parents: Helen and Loren Baker; sisters, Mary and her husband Bill and children, Jennifer and Aaron, and Laura and husband George; a son, Zackery; three daughters, Stephanie and her husband Charles Smith, Michelle and her husband Carlos Pacheco, and Jennifer Underwood, all of Lancaster, Penn.; 13 grandchildren and 10-great grandchildren, all of Pennsylvania; a sister, Eunice Paulson of Forest City, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Sarah of Geneva, Minn.; and special friend Gloria Wilson.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Asahel, Ellsworth, Ardell and Duane; sisters-in-law: Evelyn and Capatola; and brother-in-law, Paul Paulson.

In place of flowers, Virgil’s request was to send memorial to the Building Project of Trinity Lutheran Church 501 S. Washington Ave., Albert Lea,

or Crossroads Community Hospice, Albert Lea.
