Arnold L. ‘Arny’ Hanson

The funeral service for Arnold L. “Arny” Hanson of 1001 Plainview Lane, Albert Lea, formerly of rural Hartland, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Richland. The Rev. Philip A. Lewison will officiate. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Richland. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the church.

Arny died on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at the Albert Lea Medical Center. He was 75.

He was born on Sept. 22,1926, in Hartland, the son of Harold and Clara (Amundson) Hanson. A lifelong resident of Freeborn County, Arny began his life’s work of farming as a young boy.

He graduated from Freeborn High School. On Oct. 22,1947, he married Theresa “Tess” Weckwerth at St. Peter Lutheran Church in New Richland. They lived in rural Hartland until moving into Albert Lea in 1972.

In addition to farming, Arny had also worked at Queens Products and was a Farmers Union Insurance Agent. He continued “farming” until a couple of years ago. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, and a former member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Richland where he had been Sunday School

Superintendent for 25 years, was active in the Men’s Club, and served on the Church Council. He had served on the Freeborn School Board, was a strong DFL member, running for the House of Representatives, was a member of Toastmasters and the Southside Businessmen’s Association. In addition to farming, Arny also had a passion for fishing, hunting and playing ball. He was a member of the Albert Lea Sportsmen’s Club and the Freeborn County Softball Hall of Fame.

He will be greatly missed by his family: wife, Theresa “Tess” of Albert Lea; four children: Doreen and her husband Dave Kennedy of Farmington, Minn., Dennis Hanson and his wife Bonnie of Minnesota Lake, Deanna and her husband Patrick McCashin of Alexandria, and Dale Hanson of Albert Lea; grandchildren: David Kennedy and his wife Tonya of Farmington, Daniel Kennedy and his wife Erica of Mankato, Dawn Kennedy of Farmington, Sheila Hanson of North Mankato, Brendan McCashin of Chaska, and Brian McCashin of Apple Valley, Minn.; great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Courtney, Carter and Madeleine; four brothers: Carl Hanson and his wife Virginia of Albert Lea, Walter Hanson and Palmer Hanson, both of rural Hartland, and Roger Hanson of Hartford, Conn.; sister, Edna and her husband Marlin Omoth of Spring Grove, Minn.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Peggy Hanson of Youngstown, N.Y., Bernard Weckwerth and his wife Mabel of Albert Lea, Dorothy and her husband Pastor Fred Hagen of Burnsville, Leone and her husband Jim Svelmoe of Rochester, and Lois and her husband Stan Miller of Owatonna; and several nieces and nephews.

Arny was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Leona in infancy, and Gladys Eblen and her husband Bud; and a brother, Curtis Hanson.

Arny touched many lives, and he will be greatly missed by those who loved him.
