Harriet M. Kaufman, 85, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Harriet M. Kaufman, age 85, of Albert Lea, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at Salem Lutheran Church. The Rev. Jay Dahlvang will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by area servicemen’s organizations. Visitation is 5 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the services.

Harriet died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at her daughter’s home in Albert Lea from a recent diagnosis of cancer.

Harriet Maurine Kaufman was born March 19, 1917, to Herbert and Martha (Endell) Hoyne in Freeborn County. She attended Albert Lea area schools, graduating from Albert Lea High School. Harriet was also a graduate of the Naeve School of Nursing. She served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Nursing Corps during World War II. On Jan. 20, 1952, Harriet was united in marriage to Clarence Kaufman at Salem Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. She was an RN on the surgical floor at Naeve Hospital and in later years was a nursing supervisor. Harriet was a board member of the Naeve Hospital Foundation and a volunteer in the Naeve Hospital Auxiliary and at the Albert Lea Medical Center. She had lived in the area all her life and was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church. Harriet was a very generous and caring person.

Survivors include her daughters: Deborah Kaufman of Albert Lea, and Patricia Cotton and husband Robert of Albert Lea; grandchildren: Gram Cotton and wife Stephanie of Rochester, and Sara Cotton of Albert Lea; sisters-in-law: Marvel Hanson, Bernice Venem and Corina Stoner, all of Albert Lea; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friend, Donald E. Jacobson of Albert Lea.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; her brother, Russell Hoyne; and brothers-in-law: Alvin, Alfred, and Verne Kaufman.
