The state legislature and Ventura administration came to an agreement to allocate $32 million for flood relief to 19 counties in northwestern Minnesota that were affected by floods this summer. A special session has been called for next Thursday to pass the proposed relief package.

“I know many families and businesses are hurting right now, wondering if they’ll get needed repairs done before winter arrives,&uot; Rep. Dan Dorman, R-Albert Lea, said. &uot;I remember the frustration families had a few years ago after springs storms ripped through their communities in southeastern Minnesota. The state must be able to act quickly to help communities in such emergencies.&uot;

According to Dorman, the governor and lawmakers agreed to use available cash slated for other state projects for the flood relief. The fund shifts would be reimbursed by state bonding.

The plan would help Roseau, Ada, Warroad, Mahnomen and other communities hit by heavy rains in June.

Roseau Mayor Jeff Pelowski said the special session is the &uot;first good news we’ve had here in about three months.&uot;
