The annual fall celebration at the Freeborn County Historical Museum, Autumn in the Village, will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The event offers visitors the change to enjoy an afternoon of demonstrations, music, storytelling, apple pie and ice cream, children’s crafts, exhibits by area museums and more.

As a new feature this year, Kelly Callahan will do antique appraisals. There will be a $3 cost for each item appraised, with proceeds going to the museum.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to ride in the farm wagon pulled by the 1937 John Deere A, and children can ride on Crossroads Evangelical Free Church’s

Promiseland Express. The Twilight Treadlers will be spinning on the parsonage porch, Simply Sisters will be making soap near the hardware store, and the Freeborn County Geneaological Society will have people on hand to help with research questions. There will be demonstrations of tatting, quilting and embroidery, music by the Fountain Street Brass and Betty Thompson, and several other activities.

Memberships available that day will be good through December 2003. Household membership costs start at $20 and include free admission to the museum and library, quarterly newsletters and special rates for museum-sponsored trips.

The new Freeborn County Heritage calendar for 2003 will also be available. This calendar is a fund-raising venture for the museum. Photos include historic scenes of villages around the country with the cover showing the county courthouse as it looked in 1890. The cost of the calendar is $6 or $5 each if two or more are purchased.

The Freeborn County Museum and Historical Village is located at 1031 Bridge Ave., Albert Lea. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for ages 12-18 and free for members and children 11 and under.

Friday, Sept. 13

– The North Star of Iowa Corn Maze and Secret Garden will be open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Admission is $5, with children 5 and under admitted free. To get to the maze from Albert Lea, go south on Highway 65. Just north of Northwood, turn west on 490th Street, then go west on the blacktop for a sixteenth of a mile.

– Freeborn County DFL is sponsoring a spaghetti supper from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Union Center, 404 E. Main St., Albert Lea. The event will also honor the memories of Marv Wangen and Don Nielsen. Quicksilver Entertainment karaoke will be playing before and after talks by DFL candidates. The cost is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children 4-10 and $10 for families. Children ages 3 and younger eat free.

Saturday, Sept. 14

– The Glenville First Lutheran Church Women will hold a fall festival beginning with coffee and rolls at 8 a.m. A meatball dinner will be served beginning at 11 a.m. Cost is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children 5 to 10 years, and preschoolers eat free. There will also be raffles, crafts, produce and a bake sale.

– The eighth annual Young Eagle Flight Rally, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association Vintage Aircraft Division Chapter 13 will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Albert Lea Municipal Airport. Free airplane rides will be offered to kids ages 8 to 17, when signed up by a parent. For more information, call Paul Stieler at 377-2291.

– The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market will be held in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street beginning at 9 a.m.

– The Clarks Grove Area Heritage Society will sponsor a community picnic at Bob’s Park in Clarks Grove beginning at 5 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass, plates and utensils as well as lawn chairs. Beverages will be furnished. The program will be Bev Jackson, executive director of the Freeborn County Historical Society. The public is invited.

– Freeborn County Pheasant and Habitat will hold its 28th annual banquet at the Union Center in Albert Lea. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6:30 p.m. There will be 10 grand prizes plus many others. Cost is $20 per person. Call 874-3774 for ticket information.
