An Albert Lea man was sentenced Wednesday to 98 months in prison for stabbing his girlfriend.

Randall Romeo Caron was charged with a first-degree assault for stabbing his girlfriend, Annette Marie Lestrud, in her apartment on East Front Street November of last year.

Caron was found the following day in a wooded area near Railroad Avenue. When he was surrounded by two ALPD officers, he brandished a knife. One of the officers fired twice. Caron was the shot in his chest and arrested.

For charges on the assault on the police officers, County Attorney Craig Nelson charged Caron with two counts on first-degree assault. Nelson demanded a consecutive sentence which means Caron would have to serve the penalty for each incident separately.

As a part of plea-bargaining agreement, Nelson downgraded the assault charges for attacking the officers to second and fourth degree charges. The prosecutor and defense also agreed to let Caron serve penalties concurrently in exchange of accepting a longer period of jail time than a state sentencing guideline for the stabbing charge demands.
