ALHS basketball girls can’t catch Spring Grove

Coach Karol Hansen added up the numbers and did not like the totals.

Eleven free throws attempted for her Albert Lea High School girls’ basketball team. Twenty-five fouls on the Tigers. Thirty-one free throws for Spring Grove, and 12 fouls on the Lions.

It added up to a 62-50 Albert Lea loss in the first round of the Tiger Classic at ALHS Friday.

&uot;I’m not disappointed with the kids,&uot; said Hansen. &uot;We’re working so hard on defense. But we have to find a way to get closer to matching our opponents on the line.&uot;

The first quarter was also pivotal. The Tigers had trouble finding the basket and fell behind 14-4. It was 32-15 at halftime and 46-35 after three quarters.

The Tigers had 20 turnovers.

&uot;We did the things we wanted to defensively,&uot; said Hansen. &uot;But the turnovers killed us.&uot;

Danielle Rankin led the Tigers with 19 points and five rebounds. Jenny Hovendick had 15 points, Amy Ravenhorst four points, five rebounds and four steals, Amber Edwards five points, seven rebounds and three steals, Nicole Rafdal three points, Jess Hanson two points.

The loss dropped the Tigers into the consolation final against Bethlehem Academy on Saturday. The Tigers resume Big Nine Conference play Thursday at home against Rochester Mayo.
