Earl Dean Barickman, 78, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Earl Dean Barickman, age 78, of Albert Lea and formerly of Fairmont and Lewisville, Minn., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7,

at the Truman Church of Christ in Truman, Minn. The Rev. Merrill Davis will officiate. Burial will be at Fort Ridgely Cemetery in Fairfax, Minn. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home in Albert Lea, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Barickman died at his home Tuesday evening, Dec. 3, 2002.

Earl Dean Barickman was born on April 29, 1924, at his parents’ home in rural Lewisville, the son of Lloyd and Beulah (Leonard) Barickman. He attended country school in rural Lewisville and graduated from Truman High School is 1942. Upon graduation, Earl attended the University of Minnesota and was a member of the Acacia Fraternity and participated in the ROTC program. He married Gladys Mae Johnson on July 12, 1944, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Odin. Earl and Gladys farmed in rural Lewisville until 1976. He also drove vegetable truck for Stokleys and livestock truck for Marv Carlson of Fairmont for several decades. Three sons were born to this marriage and their second son, Leon Ross, was killed in action while serving with the U.. Marine Corps in Vietnam on July 27, 1969. They moved to their house on Hall Lake in Fairmont in 1976. After both Earl and Gladys retired, they moved to Albert Lea in 1998. Earl was an active member of the Truman Church of Christ, founding member of the Watonwan Historical Society, a 4-H leader, and a Gold Star Parent.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Albert Lea; sister, Lawana Westhoff of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and brother, Keith of Truman; as well as son, Ivan Barickman of Punta Gorda, Fla., his daughters, Avonelle Lovhaug of Shoreview, Minn., and Roila Hogan of Bloomington, Minn., and his son Leon Ross Barickman II of Minneapolis; son, Kurt Barickman and daughter-in-law Jill and their two daughters, Sarah and Abby Barickman, of Albert Lea also survive Earl. Included are three great-grandchildren, Graham and Lewis Lovhaug of Shoreview, and Yvanna Hogan of Bloomington; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; son, Leon R. Barickman, KIA, Vietnam; and sister, Alma Leigh Johnson.
