School referendum’s tax impact to be slightly less

While an article in Sunday’s Star Tribune said that school referenda from the Nov. 5 election didn’t show up on the truth in taxation statements that were sent out last week, Albert Lea school district director of finance Mark Stotts said that the statements sent out in Freeborn County included the recently passed referendum.
Stotts also said the tax increase for the referendum is going to be lower than the district first expected.
Instead of a 0.00154 percent tax on a property’s assessed value, instead it will be 0.00148 percent.
While the difference is small, it does make a change to the taxes for a $100,000 house from $154 per year to $148 per year.
If you would like to figure out your school taxes yourself, multiply your assessed market value by 0.000148.
No taxpayers showed up to the truth in taxation meeting held by the district on Tuesday night.
