Swimmers take 3rd in AL Relays

The high school boys’ swimming and diving team did not avoid competition in its first annual Tiger Relays, and the Tigers did not disappoint the home faithful.
The locals finished third in a tough 12-team field Saturday in the ALHS pool.
Perennial power Lakeville won with 146 points, followed by defending Big Nine champion Faribault with 96. The Tigers were right behind with 93, followed by Austin at 87, Northfield 80, Rochester Century 74, Mankato West 71, Mankato East 70, Owatonna 55, Rochester Mayo 53, Farmington 52 and Rochester John Marshall 46.
Chris Jackson, Ben Matheson and Ben Schreiber combined for the Tigers’ lone first-place finish, winning the 300-yard breaststroke relay in 3:22.07.
The Tigers were second in four races, the 400 freestyle relay with Ryan Lowe, Colton Jensen, Mitch Johnson and Ethan Berg; the 600 freestyle with Lowe, Jensen and Johnson; the 300 medley relay with Matheson, Schreiber and Josh Elwood; and the 300 butterfly relay with Johnson, Berg and Elwood. Jackson, Matheson, Berg and Schreiber took third in the 200 medley.
Other ALHS places: 200 freestyle relay, eighth (Jackson, Lowe, Jon VanErkel, Matthew Hagen); 300 backstroke relay, 11th, (Casey Ciffra, Elwood, Matthew VanFossen); 850 crescendo relay, ninth, (Jensen, VanErkel, Hagen, Ciffra). The Tigers return to action Thursday, Jan. 2 at Rochester John Marshall.
