Charles W. (Tommy) King, 85, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Charles W. (Tommy) King, 85, of Albert Lea will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Hollandale Conservative Congregational Church. The Rev. William Bankester will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. today, Jan. 26, 2003, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Tommy died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Charles William King was born Jan. 12, 1918, to Custer and Bessie (Messler) King in Williston, North Dakota. He attended school in Williston. At the age of 15, Tommy and his family moved to Freeborn County, settling in the Hollandale area. Charles worked in the onion fields and it was there he met Florence Randall. They were united in marriage Jan. 4, 1941, in Adell, Iowa. Tommy worked for Paul D. Jones for almost 49 years. He was responsible for designing and building much of the equipment that is still used today. In 1971, the couple moved to Albert Lea. Tommy was a very talented individual who enjoyed carving many intricate and detailed objects and figurines. He enjoyed bowling and working on and repairing watches and clocks. Tommy was a member of the Hollandale Conservative Congregational Church where he had been an usher for 52 years as well as a member of the church board and a deacon. Whatever was needed at the church, Tommy would take care of it.

Survivors include his wife, Florence of Albert Lea; daughter, Janice and husband, Jim Dittmar of Aurora, Colo.; grandchildren, Tami and husband, Kevin Graham and Kimberly Dittmar; great-grandchildren, Dillon and Marina Bae; a sister, Clara Ferrell of Williston, N.D.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; son, Charles; and two brothers.
