GLENVILLE &045; Last season, the Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team went to Medford and humbled the home team, shooting 60 percent from the floor in a 20-point victory.
It was avenged Monday night.
The Wolverines lost their first post-holiday game to a bigger, deeper Medford squad, falling 59-38 in a nonconference meeting at Glenville.
The story for the Wolverines was turnovers &045; they had a season-high 32 &045; and a familiar nemesis, a slow third quarter. After trailing 17-15 after one quarter and 36-25 at halftime, the Wolverines were outscored 11-5 in the third.
The biggest thing, though, was the turnovers.
&uot;We just didn’t hang onto the basketball tonight,&uot; said Wolverines coach Lisa Ziebell. &uot;We were rusty. We hadn’t played since the 20th. We were outplayed, outhustled and outrebounded.&uot;
A positive, according to Ziebell, was the play of some juniors, including a team-high nine points by Megan Bjorklund.
&uot;Some of the juniors stepped up,&uot; said Ziebell, who was also satisfied with her squad’s overall effort.
&uot;We played hard, we gave 100 percent,&uot; said the coach. &uot;The shots just weren’t falling and we weren’t getting any second chances.&uot;
The Wolverines struggled from the floor, making 11 of 42 tries, and at the line, where they were 3-for-11. Medford shot 18 free throws and made 10.
Alisa Rayman followed Bjorklund for the Wolverines with seven points. She also registered four rebounds, five steals and two assists. Sara Greibrok had six points, Katie Brackey five points, six rebounds, five steals and three blocks, Jenna Brackey four points, four rebounds and five steals, Lauren Bremer three points, Leann Chessmore two points and three assists, Ellen Hansen two points.
Leah Steinbauer led three Medford scorers in double figures, with 16 points. Alyse Hager scored 13, Karen Smith 11.
&uot;They really pushed the ball up the court,&uot; said Ziebell. &uot;Except for Spring Grove, it was the fastest paced game we’ve had this year.&uot;
The Wolverines, 4-5 overall, put their 4-1 Southeast Conference record on the line at Lanesboro Thursday.
