Funeral services for Martin S. Olson, 90, of Albert Lea, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Lissa Kahl will officiate. Interment will be in Geneva Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the area servicemen’s organizations. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today, Jan. 29, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the services on Thursday.
Martin died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Home.
Martin Sebastian Olson was born Sept. 29, 1912, to Herman J. and Alma (Christopherson) Olson in Buffalo, Mont. The family moved to Albert Lea in 1926. Martin attended Albert Lea Schools and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1932. He was confirmed at First Lutheran Church and later transferred to Trinity Lutheran Church where he was on the Board of Deacons for six years.
On July 3, 1938, Martin was united in marriage to Gladys Wayne at Trinity Lutheran Church. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Martin was a receiving clerk and foreman at Wilson & Co., retiring after 33 years. After retiring, the couple spent five months each year for twenty years in McAllen and Mission, Texas. During the summer months, Martin drove bus for the disabled children and also worked at the Albert Lea Country Club. He loved biking. Martin was a life member of the Elks and also belonged to the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys of Albert Lea; son, John W. Olson of Mineral Point, Wis.; daughter, Susan K. and husband Darrell Hensel of Albert Lea; grandchildren: Jaclyn and husband Kevin Hanson, and Jay and Keith Hensel; great-grandchildren: Wesley and Levi Hanson; and many nieces and nephews.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Milton, Lester, and Sievert Olson; and sister, Olava Jensen.
