Stan Sevaldson, 84, Albert Lea

The memorial service for Stan Sevaldson, &uot;Skateboard Stan,&uot; of 333 E. Second St., Albert Lea, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the United Methodist Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Greg Ciesluk will officiate. Military honors will be accorded by Albert Lea veteran’s organizations. Stan graciously donated his body to the Mayo Clinic for medical science; there will be no reviewal. Friends may visit with the family from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church in Albert Lea, and one hour before the service. His final resting place will be Graceland Cemetery.
Stan was born on Jan. 21, 1918, in St. Peter, the son of Ivan and Cecelia (Rasmuson) Sevaldson. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1936. Growing up, he had lived in St. Peter and Mankato, and then came to Albert Lea in 1939 to play baseball with the Albert Lea Packers. Stan served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from January of 1942 until September of 1945. He continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, serving our country for more than 20 years, and attained the rank of major. He obtained his Air Force wings on Feb. 8, 1944, just four days before he was united in marriage to Charlotte Brown, the daughter of Jefferson and Emma Brown on Feb. 12 at the First Methodist Church in Albert Lea.
Stan had worked for Wilson and Company from 1939-1941, from 1945 until 1959 he had served as a clerk at the post office, and then from 1958 until 1978 he served as postmaster in Albert Lea. He had been an active member of the United Methodist Church throughout his life, serving on many committees, ushering, and singing in the choir. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Elks, the Masonic Lodge, the Golden K Kiwanis, the Lions Club, the Eagles and the National Association of Postmasters. He had been honored as Freeborn County Senior Citizen of the Year in 2002, and also Elks Citizen of the Year in the same year. Stan was exceptionally active within the community, volunteering and giving to many organizations and functions.
He was a passionate baseball fan. He had played on the St. Louis Cardinals farm team and had coached Legion baseball for many years.
Stan was a pilot and an avid airplane enthusiast. He was also a NASCAR racing fan. Stan will long be remembered as &uot;Skateboard Stan.&uot; In his last years he had been the driving force in the organization and development of a skateboard park for all our area youth. Much time, effort and energy were used to overcome the obstacles to make the park a reality for the kids he cared so much about.
Stan died on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at the Albert Lea Medical Center. He was 84.
Stan is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Albert Lea; son, Brad Sevaldson and his partner Greg Uthoff of Delray Beach, Fla.; son, Dwight Sevaldson and his wife Kathy (Paul) and dear grandson, Jeffrey Sevaldson, all of Wheaton, Ill.; sister, Mona and her husband Virgil Knudson of Mesa, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Warren (Bud) Brown and his wife Mary Jane of Bella Vista, Ark.; and three nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Stan’s compassionate, enthusiastic zest for life touched many young and old. He will always be remembered for the heart he shared with all of us.
