Study will close only part of Edgewater Park

Since the city approved an environmental study for Edgewater Park, some have wondered how much of the lakeside park will be closed, and for how long.
Steven Jahnke, the city’s environmental engineer, said the northwestern section of the park will be closed for most of the summer due to the study. He said the study may go on about one month, but added that more of the park could be closed depending on what the study finds.
The park is used in the summer by the Bayside Skiers for water-ski shows, but Jahnke said that part of the park won’t be affected by the study.
The park pavilion, the boat landing and the southern part of the park, south of the road, will be open during the study.
The testing in 2003 will use 40 &uot;test pits&uot; which will be dug by a backhoe on the 32-acre site. Also included in the study will be the building of groundwater monitoring wells and a study of the nature of the waste buried on the site. The study will identify additional places for groundwater study, and will give an evaluation of remedial options if necessary, according to a press release on the park from the city.
The site was once a garbage dump.
The press release also said that signs will be posted around the testing site.
