Sue Ellen Kaupang, 56, Austin

A memorial service for Sue Ellen Kaupang, age 56, who died Wednesday, Jan. 1. 2003, following a battle with brain cancer, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Bethlehem Free Methodist Church, Austin, with the Rev. Michael Ewert officiating.

Sue was born Aug. 9, 1946, in Albert Lea, Freeborn County, to Henry and Edith (Ashworth) DeVries. She lived her entire childhood and school years on a vegetable farm outside Maple Island. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1964. She married Arlen Jacobson on July 24, 1965, and moved to Austin. After their divorce in 1975, she worked part time as a delivery driver for Winnebago motor homes and traveled throughout the USA and Canada. She then attended the Austin Vo-Tech to learn secretarial word processing and obtained her administrative assistant position with Hormel Foods Corporation in 1985, where she remained until her illness. She married Russell Kaupang on May 1, 1999, and moved to Rochester,

where they attended Celebration Community Church in Byron. She loved to read and write poetry, published two poetry books entitled &uot;Random Thoughts of a Meandering Mind,” and &uot;a potpourri of poetry,” was an avid knitter and enjoyed counted cross-stitch, collected loons and cats, enjoyed traveling, boating, camping, and fishing with her husband, and spending time with family and friends. In the summer of 2002, she and her husband returned to Bethlehem Free Methodist Church in Austin.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Kaupang; three children: Jerry and his wife Ruth of Hartland, Wis., Sandra and her husband Jim Braun of Champlin, Minn., and Evan and his wife Lisa of Peoria, Ill.; six grandchildren: Caleb, Joshua, Chloe, Jerica, Janessa, and Jacob; two stepchildren: Tammie Kaupang of Minneapolis, and Kim and her husband Bill Bartodziej of Richfield; two step-grandchildren: Seth and Drew; brother, Jack DeVries and his wife Marlene of Hollandale; sisters: Dorothy Stegenga of Hollandale, Carol and her husband, W. Jay Hadlock of Herndon, Va., and Joyce and her husband, Dave Reynen of Austin; a step-sister, LaVonne and her husband Denny Sundlee of Montevideo, Minn.; and several aunts and uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother-in-law, Elmer Stegenga.
