Swimmers improve to 4-0 in dual meets

ROCHESTER &045; For five events, the Rochester John Marshall Rockets were very competitive with the Albert Lea High School boys’ swimming and diving team.

After that there wasn’t much doubt.

The Tigers finished first in the remaining seven races and didn’t count their points in the final one while winning 97-86 in a Big Nine dual meet at Rochester Thursday night. Albert Lea improved to 4-0 in duals, 3-0 in the conference.

The Tigers, who have a goal of sending all three relays to state for the second year in a row, swept the relays for the first time this season.

Ethan Berg, Ben Schreiber, Josh Elwood and Ryan Lowe won the 200 medley relay in 1:51.16, nearly nine seconds faster than JM’s top foursome. Ben Matheson, Mitch Johnson, Colton Jensen and Lowe took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.16. Jensen, Johnson, Berg and Elwood were fastest in the 400 freestyle relay, clocking 3:41.96.

Johnson and Berg each tacked on a pair of individual wins, Johnson’s in the 200 free in 1:56.39 and the 500 free in 5:26.23, Berg in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.71 and the 100 backstroke in 1:02.82.

Also placing first were Schreiber, who won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.53, and Lowe, who won the 100 free in 55.31 seconds.

Other ALHS places: Jensen, second, 200 free, 2:01.8 and second, 500 free, 5:29.62; Schreiber, second, 200 individual medley, 2:19.65; Elwood, third, 200 IM, 2:21.62 and second, 100 butterfly, 1:02.97; Matheson, fourth, 200 IM, 2:22.6 and third, 100 breast, 1:11.4; Lowe, second, 50 free, 24.68; Matt Stoneking, fourth, diving, 100.5; Tyler Peterson, fifth, 100 butterfly, 1:38.71; Hagen, fifth, 100 free, 1:02.62; Matt VanFossen, fifth, 500 free, 6:21.0 and fourth, 100 back, 1:16.48; Casey Ciffra, fifth, 100 back, 1:19.2; Chris Jackson, fourth, 100 breast, 1:11.94.

The Tigers host Faribault this Thursday.
