Weekend Planner: Eagles’ events, fund-raisers this weekend

The Albert Lea Eagles do their part in the fight against cancer as Eagles Cancer Telethon events continue this weekend.
On Saturday, fresh baked cookies will be available at the Eagles Club, 205 W. William St., from 9 a.m. on. A white elephant and bake sale runs from 9:30 a.m. on, and the local cable-thon, featuring local entertainment live from the Eagles, runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Cable Channel 6, said organizer Ron Hagen.
Also on Saturday, the Eagles will serve lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and supper from 6-7:30 p.m. with proceeds going to the telethon. The local pledge number is 373-0157 Saturday until 8 p.m.
On Sunday, the Eagles will present their Cancer Breakfast from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Tickets are $4.50 for adults.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Jan. 17
– The All-Member Show continues at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., from noon-4 p.m. The show features everything from watercolor, pastel, acrylic and oil paintings to prints pulled from nature and bronze sculptures.
Admission to the galleries is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.
– St. Theodore Catholic Church will hold a fish fry from 5-6:30 p.m. in Marian Hall. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Children under 3 eat free. The menu includes fish, mashed or baked potatoes, cole slaw, rolls and ice cream with toppings.
Saturday, Jan. 18
– The Albert Lea High School Choir and Orchestra will sell Krispy Kreme Doughnuts beginning at 7 a.m. in the parking lot of Ben’s Floral and Frame Designs/Lakeside Cafe. Doughnuts are $7 per dozen, and help support the groups’ trip to New Orleans. If people would like to reserve a dozen doughnuts, they should contact a choir or orchestra member or call Diane Heaney at 379-5386.
– The All-Member Show continues at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
– The two Albert Lea High School jazz bands will be playing at the fish fry at the American Legion.
Dinner is from 4:45-7:45 p.m., and tickets are available from marching band members for $7 in advance or for $8 at the door.
Tickets may also be arranged for in advance by calling the office of band director Scott Fitzsimonds at 379-5385.
– Albert Lea Community Youth is sponsoring an area-wide coffee house for students in grades 9-12 from 8-11 p.m. Saturday at Crossroads Evangelical Free Church Ramsey Center, 207 E. Fourth St., Albert Lea. There will be music, games, foods and drink available. For more information, call Scott at 377-3276.
Sunday, Jan. 19
– A benefit for Todd Schumaker, who was diagnosed with brain cancer this past fall and is receiving ongoing treatment, will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Senior Center in Skyline Mall. For a freewill donation, a sloppy joe dinner will be served. A live auction will begin at 1 p.m. Todd and his wife Nikki have two sons, Brody and Logan. Scott is the son of Melvin and Phyllis Schumaker and son-in-law of Kevin and Chris Johnson and Kent and Kim Toft. Donations may be sent to: Benefit, in care of Skyline Hairport, 1715 W. Main St., Albert Lea.
– Northbridge Mall will host Bridal Expo 2003 from noon-5 p.m. There will be fashion shows at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., as well as 30 booths of wedding professionals on hand. There will be drawings for over $2,500 in prizes, including a grand prize honeymoon package.
