Weekend Planner: Teddy bears on tap this weekend

It’s time for a teddy bear picnic. The Story Lady Doll & Toy Museum, 131 N. Broadway Ave., will host a teddy bear picnic Saturday, Jan. 25. There will be two sessions, at noon and 2 p.m. Special guest will be Darrel Amundson, who will display his teddy bears and tell about his collection. Dolores Glassel will show several bears she makes from neckties. Marianne DePoppe will read special stories to the children. Anyone from 2 to 92 is welcome, and should bring a favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal, as well as a sack lunch. Beverages will be provided by the museum. Children are admitted free to this event.

– The All-Member Show continues at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., from noon-4 p.m. The show features everything from watercolor, pastel, acrylic and oil paintings to prints pulled from nature and bronze sculptures.

Admission to the galleries is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.

– A special youth service with the Rev. Frank Salas and special music by the Rev. Jay Hernandez of Escondido, Calif., will be held at noon at Grace Christian Church, 501 W. College St. Those needing a ride should call the Rev. George Marin at 377-9608. Adults are also welcome.

– The third annual Gourmet Cooks’ Auction will be held at the Elks Lodge. Tickets are $15 per person or two tickets for $25, and reservations may be made by calling the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce office at 373-3938. The social time starts at 5:30 p.m. with tasting of gourmet food at 6 p.m. and the auction at 7. There is a wide variety of items up for bid.

Saturday, Jan. 25

– The All-Member Show concludes at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave. Hours are from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Sunday, Jan. 26

– The Albert Lea Boys Basketball Boosters will hold a pancake breakfast fund-raiser from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Elks Club. Cost is $4 for adults and $3 for children. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, potatoes and beverage.
