ALHS matmen pound Panthers

The ratings fiasco has apparently been corrected, but the Albert Lea Tigers still looked plenty ornery.

The Tigers, who blasted Winona 63-6 last Friday after dropping from No. 7 to No. 10 in the Class AAA state wrestling ratings, ended the regular season with a 68-6 thumping of Rochester Century at Albert Lea High School Thursday night.

The Tigers, No. 5 in the corrected version of the state poll compiled by The Guillotine, finished 8-1 in the Big Nine and improved to 16-2 overall. Century fell to 1-8 and 3-18.

&uot;I would have liked to have had a little better competition going into the section tournament, but we have to go with the way the schedule is,&uot; said Tigers head coach Larry Goodnature. &uot;We went out there and got the job done. Now, our regular season is over, and we’ve got to go back in the practice room Monday and get ready for the section team tournament.&uot;

The section seeding is Monday, but Albert Lea is virtually assured the No. 2 spot behind Owatonna. The Tigers will host an opening-round meet next Thursday.

The outcome against Century was never in doubt.

After Randy Larson received a forfeit at 215 pounds to start it off, Chris Hable scored a fall in 46 seconds at 275, Zach Hansen won by tech fall at 103, and Josh Hansen pinned his opponent in 1:07 at 112. That put Albert Lea on top 23-0.

The next two bouts were the closest of the night and the Panthers’ only wins. Matt Morris fell 6-4 at 119, Taylor Ignaszewski lost 9-8 at 125.

The rest of the results: 130, Neal Underdahl won by fall; 135, Adam Elseth won 11-3 major decision; 140, Adam Morreim won by tech fall; 145, Brandon Klukow won by fall in 1:51; 152, Dustin Eggum won by fall in 55 seconds; 160, Jared Butler won by fall in 1:56; 171, Derek Goodnature won by fall in 1:19; 189, Mike Honeycutt won by fall in 41 seconds.

Next Thursday’s section action at ALHS starts at 6 p.m., with the No. 7 seed facing No. 10. The Tigers will take on the winner at 7:45. The winner of the final meet advances to the section’s final four at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.
