There’s a Web site containing the top seeds for the Section 1A Boys’ Swimming and Diving Meet that calls itself the &uot;Psych Sheet.&uot;
For the Albert Lea Tigers, there’s plenty to be psyched about.
Entering this week’s two-day section meet, the Tigers have already posted times under the state standard in nine races, including all three relays.
Two other individuals are very close to the state qualifying time.
&uot;It’s looking good,&uot; said coach Jon Schmitz. &uot;We’re looking to have fun and take a lot of guys to state.&uot;
Swimming preliminaries are set to begin at 5 p.m. today, with the finals at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Community Center Aquatic Facility in Inver Grove Heights. The top two individuals in each event, and those meeting the qualfying time, advance to state.
Getting to state appears automatic for the Tigers’ relay teams. They’re seeded No. 1 in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a season-best time of 3:21.5, well under the state standard of 3:34:52. They also have the top seed in the 200 medley at 1:43.36, with the state standard 1:48.32. Albert Lea is seeded second, just behind Simley, with a time of 1:31.8 in the 200 freestyle relay, which has a state standard of 1:35.56.
Schmitz will choose among Ethan Berg, Mitch Johnson, Ben Schreiber, Ben Matheson, Josh Elwood, Ryan Lowe, Colton Jensen and Chris Jackson for the relays.
Schreiber, a freshman, has the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, 1:01.93. The state standard is 1:05.7. Jackson is seeded fourth with a time of 1:06.73.
Johnson, a junior, is seeded second in the 200 freestyle at 1:46.46, while Jensen, a senior, is sixth at 1:53.08. The state qualifying time is 1:53.75. Johnson is also the No. 2 seed in the 100 freestyle at 48.44 seconds, with the standard 51.45. Lowe and Jensen’s seed times are 52.21 and 52.50, respectively.
Berg, a sophomore, is seeded second in the 100 backstroke at 57.97, below the state standard of 59.46. Berg is the No. 3 seed in the 100 butterfly at 56.2 and Elwood is fifth at 57.92, with the qualifying time 58.78.
Schreiber and Matheson, seeded sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200 IM, are also both below the state standard.
While Schmitz said St. Thomas Academy and Simley are expected to finish 1-2 in the team standings, the Tigers simply need to do what they’ve done all season to have one of their best-ever section performances. They were undefeated in regular-season dual meets and won the Big Nine championship.
&uot;If the guys go out and do what they’re supposed to do, we’re going to be taking a lot of people to state,&uot; said Schmitz.
