Rep. Dan Dorman has introduced a bill to issue special license plates for alternative-fuel vehicles, allows the cars to use high-occupancy vehicle lanes.

The alternative-fuel vehicles can run with an ethanol-based fuel called E-85. The fuel, consisting of approximately 85 percent ethanol, reduces ozone-depleting tail pipe pollution by 25 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 40 percent compared to conventional gasoline.

&uot;It’s an opportunity to help spread the word about E-85,&uot; Dorman said. &uot;Many cars and trucks can use E-85 today, but not enough people know about it.&uot;

Only specially equipped cars called flexible-fuel vehicles (FFVs) can use the fuel.

HOV lanes on major freeways in the Twin Cities area are restricted to buses and vehicles with two or more people. Dorman expects the bill would boost the use of E-85.
