Harland C. ‘Chuck’ Zenk, 67, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Harland C. &uot;Chuck&uot; Zenk will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul Aldrich and the Rev. Ronald Jansen will officiate. Interment will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Chuck was received into his Heavenly Father’s arms on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Harland Charles Zenk was born on Jan. 23, 1936, in Truman, Minn., the son of Francis J. and Lillie V. (Wiesner) Zenk. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Truman. He attended District 74 schools and graduated from Truman High School. Chuck held a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from South Dakota State University. He was the president of Zenk, Read, Trygstad and Associates, a local engineering and architectural firm. Chuck was a registered professional engineer in twelve states, including Minnesota. Some of the professional recognitions Chuck had included Engineer of the Year for the State of Minnesota in 1986 and an appointment to Who’s Who in the Midwest in 1978. Chuck had served the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers as president for two terms in the 1970s. He also was a former national director of the National Society of Professional Engineers. Chuck had been appointed to several Governor’s Advisory Commissions and boards for engineering related matters.

Chuck was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was active in many capacities including congregational vice-chairman, chairman, elder, Sunday school superintendent, usher, and consultant on many special committees. Chuck loved sports: hunting, fishing, and particularly playing golf. He also enjoyed art and painting. Chuck was a very generous, kind, and hard working man who always had a smile and time to lend a hand.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Lillie Zenk.

He was a beloved husband and father, survived by his wife of 40 years, Cecile of Albert Lea; son, David C. Zenk and his wife Julia L. Potter of Boston, Mass.; daughter, Mary K. Zenk of Albert Lea; brother, Russell Zenk and his wife Linda of Grand Marais, Minn.; sister, Lois Hall of St. Peter; sisters-in-law: Edith Hanke of Kansas City, Sally Holmen of Glenville, June Holmen of New Richland, and Sylvia Holmen of Sun City Ariz.; brother-in-law, Donald Dencker of Sun Prairie, Wis.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
