Carrie J. Hemry, 97, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Carrie J. Hemry, age 97, of Albert Lea, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, at East Freeborn Lutheran Church. The Rev. David Hernes will officiate.

Carrie died Monday, March 3, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea. Burial of her cremains will be at East Freeborn Lutheran Church Cemetery immediately after the service. Bonnerup Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Carrie was born Jan. 29, 1906, in Riceland Township, Freeborn County, to Nels N. and Ida (Pedersen) Hemry. She lived most of her life in the Hayward and Albert Lea area. Carrie was a lifelong member of East Freeborn Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed, and took part in church circles and the Altar Guild. She attended rural schools and graduated from Luther Academy in 1924.

Carrie worked for various businesses in Albert Lea, including First National Bank, John F. Hansen Construction Co., and Bailey Electric, before moving to St. Paul. There she worked for the State of Minnesota in the Petroleum Division for five years. In 1944, Carrie returned to Albert Lea and was employed at Olson Manufacturing for 14 years and then Ramsey School for 9-1/2 years. She lived at 1008 St. Joseph Ave. for many years.

She was a charter member of Wa-tan-ye Service Club and active member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Carrie enjoyed tennis, bowling, and volunteering. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family. Carrie was a devoted aunt, good neighbor and hard worker.

Carrie is survived by one sister, Bertha Haines of St. John’s Lutheran Home; two nephews: Robert Rofshus and his wife Barbara of Albert Lea, and Wayne Hemry and his wife Norma of Ossian, Iowa; one niece, Shirley and her husband Carl Weik of Hialeah, Fla.; seven grand-nephews and five grand-nieces: including Mark Rofshus, Trish Stanley, and Ron Rofshus and their families, all of the Albert Lea area; and several great-nieces and -nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Norris, Manford, and Herman; three sisters: Carrie Jennet, Martha and Annie Viola; and two nephews: Richard Hemry and Harland Hemry.
