Editorial: Retreat is a good plan for city council

One of the most prevalent criticisms of the City of Albert Lea has been what seems like a lack of clear direction, goals and a long-term plan. That’s why Mayor Jean Eaton is doing the right thing by spearheading a council retreat to be held this week, when our elected leaders will get together and discuss the city’s priorities and, we hope, come away with a more clearly defined vision.
Some will question the widsom of spending $3,000 for a consultant to facilitate the session, especially at a time when the city expects to face budget cuts as state aid decreases. But that’s a small price to pay for a city council that is more unified and better ready to guide the city in a determined direction. Changes down the road due to funding cuts make this an even better time for the council to examine its priorities as a group.
Some cities hold these kinds of retreats annually. It would be a good idea to consider making this a tradition if this week’s session proves useful.
