Mildred Ione Ward, age 89, of Burnsville, born March 28, 1918, in Sacred Heart, Minn., died Sunday, March 23, 2003, days short of 90 years.
She was preceded in death by husband, Lorne (former superintendent of Albert Lea schools); parents, Magnus and Nellie; and brothers, Clifford, Vernon and Jerome.
She is survived by children: Susan (Donald) Jurries of Clearwater, Fla., and John (Jill) Ward of Oakdale, Minn.; grandchildren, Donald Jurries II, Lorne and Craig Wanous, and Amy and Terry Doyle; great-grandchildren: Hannah, Teagan and Charlie Wanous; sisters-in-law: Elsie Nelson, Virginia Nelson and Elaine Dye; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Hers was a life of faith and service, marked by her love of family and friends. A teacher, an avid reader, and world traveler, she also loved bridge, golf, dancing and debating politics. She adored children, especially babies. As the wife of an Army officer, she and toddler child survived the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, a life defining moment. She was one of the &uot;Greatest Generation.&uot;
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Burnsville. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the White Funeral Home. 12804 Nicollet Ave., and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park, Minneapolis.
Memorials are preferred to Prince of Peace Church or the American Heart Association.
