Weekend Planner: Bluegrass, theater and church events on tap

The Seventh Annual Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass in America Spring Bluegrass Music Festival will be held at the Budget Host Inn Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday; and Gospel singing at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Featured performers will be Dick Kimmel & Co. and Timbre Junction Band on Saturday. The Froiland Family, String Fever, Golden Harvest and Good Friends will perform all three days.

Admission is $8 for Friday, $12 for Saturday day and night, $8 for Saturday night only, $6 for Sunday, or $20 for a three-day pass. Children under 12 will be admitted for half price.

Friday, March 28

&045; The elementary art exhibit continues at the Albert Lea Art Center. Gallery hours are from noon-4 p.m. Admission is free.

&045; Hollandale Christian School students in grades kindergarten through eight will present their spring musical &uot;Fish Tales&uot; at 12:30 and 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

&045; The Albert Lea Community Theatre production of Arthur Miller’s &uot;Death of a Salesman&uot; will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea Civic Theatre. For tickets, call the box office at 377-4371.

Saturday, March 29

&045; The 2003 Albert Lea Show Choir Competition will be held in the Albert Lea High School auditorium. The daytime show lasts from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and the finals begin at 7 p.m. There will be 22 groups performing. Tickets for the day or evening shows are $5 for adults and $4 for students. Combination day and evening tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for students.

&045; Local Girl Scouts will sell cookies from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. outside Wal-Mart in the Skyline Mall.

&045; The Freeborn Mower Radio Flyers will host a show at Northbridge Mall from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

&045; Myre-Big Island State Park will present &uot;Maple Syruping in Your Backyard&uot; at 1 p.m. Listen to information on the history of maple syruping, take a hike to the &uot;sugarbush&uot; to see sap being collected, tap a tree, stop at the sugar shack to see the boiling process, and finish it off with a sample of the syrup. There is no cost for the program, but a state park vehicle permit is required on all vehicles and can be purchased at the park office.

&045; Moscow Lutheran Church will hold a soup and pie supper from 4-7 p.m. There will be chicken noodle, chili, vegetable beef and bean soup served, as well as homemade pies. A freewill offering will be received. Matching funds will be provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. To get to the church, go four miles east from Hollandale on Highway 251 and two miles south on 870th Avenue.

&045; Minnesota Festival Theatre will host an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 5-8 p.m. at the American Legion, 147 N. Broadway, Albert Lea. Tickets are $7 per person and are available at the door.

&045; The Myrtle Fire Department will hold its annual chicken fry from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Glenville American Legion. The menu includes all-you-can-eat chicken, baked potatoes, beans and cole slaw. Cost is $7 per person. Proceeds will go toward firefighter safety equipment.

Sunday, March 30

&045; A soup luncheon benefit for Paul Kvale will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

in the Lake Mills School foyer. Kvale was diagnosed with leukemia in July 2002 and has been unable to work since then. This fund-raiser will help with expenses incurred as a result of his illness. He is the son of Jim and Gloria (Sveen) of Lake Mills. There will also be a bake sale, bingo, a raffle and more. Matching funds have been requested from the Winnebago-Worth County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

&045; The Freeborn Mower Radio Flyers will host a show at Northbridge Mall from noon-5 p.m.

&045; Myre-Big Island State Park will present &uot;Maple Syruping in Your Backyard&uot; at 1 p.m.

&045; A concert of Southern Gospel music will be presented by the Calvary Connection at 4 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 2016 N. Bridge Ave., Albert Lea. The Calvary Connection includes Paul and Marly Evenson, Janet Poeschl, Dave and Pat Rambo and Liz Thunstedt.

A light lunch will be served after the concert.

There is no admission charge; a freewill offering will be taken.

&045; A prayer service, organized by area Lutheran churches and Christ Episcopal Church in this time of world crisis, will be held at 5 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church. The public is invited.

&045; Our Father’s House, located two miles south of Wal-Mart in Albert Lea, will present &uot;The Light and the Glory,&uot; an evening of food and patriotic readings and songs by the Our Father’s House Youth Group. An all-American picnic supper will begin serving at 6:30 p.m., with the program at 7:30 p.m., followed by dessert.

A freewill offering will be received for youth group activities.
