ROCHESTER &045; After two games, coach Joe Sczublewski was saying the Albert Lea High School baseball team needed to do a better job of putting the ball in play.

They did so Monday. But not often enough.

The Tigers reduced their strikeouts from previous games but were held to four hits in a 10-0, five-inning loss at Rochester Century.

The Panthers, 3-1, swept Faribault Saturday but saved their best pitcher for the Tigers, returning all-conference senior Dan Lyons.

His teammates supported him early and often, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning and four in the second.

&uot;We got behind early,&uot; said Sczublewski. &uot;They’ve got a good team. They’re the defending conference champions and showed why I guess.&uot;

The Tigers had runners in scoring position in two innings but could not bring them home.

David Villarreal was 2-for-3 with a double. Ben Meillier also doubled. Nate Loberg singled.

Loberg made another outstanding catch from his center field position, ranging to his right and making a diving grab with the bases loaded.

Derek Goodnature took the pitching loss, starting and giving up five earned runs in two innings, with six hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Josh Diaz pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits; he walked three and fanned one.

The Tigers, 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big Nine, play at Mankato East Thursday.
