County to hear committee’s budget-cutting proposal

Commissioner Dan Springborg will present a $1.2 million budget cut recommendation crafted by a special budget committee to the board meeting today.

The $1.2 million trimming is roughly based on a 4 percent cut across all departments.

Some departments &045; extension, environmental services and sheriff’s office &045; would be cut more than 4 percent. On the other hand, the cuts on the human services and highway departments’ budgets are less. The budgets for veterans’ services, surveyor, election and emergency services remain intact.

The commissioners will have a workshop on Thursday to listen to department heads.

The county is faced with the need to cut its budget because the state is likely to cut some funding to local counties as part of its effort to fix the state’s deficit.
