Marion E. Benson, 95, Clarks Grove

The memorial service for Marion E. Benson, of Clarks Grove, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the First Baptist Church of Clarks Grove. The Rev. Alvin R. Cooper will officiate. Interment will be in the Geneva Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday the at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea. There will be no reviewal at the church.

Marion died on Saturday, April 26, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea. She was 95.

She was born on July 13, 1907, in Geneva Township, the daughter of Edwin and Agnus (Larson) Arnold.

She attended Geneva Schools and later Ellendale High School.

In April of 1927, Marion married William Benson. They made their home in Geneva and she worked at a restaurant. In the early 1930s they moved to Clarks Grove where she worked at Bob’s Food Store for many years. Marion had done catering, was an excellent cook, and loved to entertain. Having company over and serving them some of the best homemade donuts gave her great pleasure. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.

She is survived by two daughters: Garnice Newbold and her husband Roy of Reno, Nev., and Iva Sletten and her husband Ken of Clarks Grove; grandchildren: Steven Counsell and his wife Hope of Sante Fe, N.M., David Counsell and his wife of Sante Fe, N.M., Barbara Hammerberg and her husband Barry of Milwaukee, Wis., Carrie Knudson of Houston, Texas, Bill Benson III and his wife Jan of Michigan, Bruce Sletten of Albert Lea, Mary Slette and her husband Donn of Wells, Lori Moe of St. Paul, Danny Sletten of La Crosse, Wis., Jerry Sletten and his wife Kim of Menomonie, Wis., and Malinda Dyrdal and her husband Tom of Albert Lea; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Benson; her son, William Benson Jr.; a brother, Alvie Arnold; and a sister, Bernice Wright.
