Cyclists may pedal into Myre-Big Island State Park on a brand-new paved trail before next winter.

Bids for the second phase of the Blazing Star Trail construction will be opened April 15. The four-mile segment extends the existing city trail to the east, passing underneath Interstate 35 and then to the south, reaching the state park.

The Department of Natural Resources and Freeborn County Trail Association have negotiated with private landowners, a railroad company and the state on the projected route. Two landowners between 767th Avenue and Interstate 35 agreed to sell a 50-foot strip of land, which would be used for the trail’s path and landscaping, according to trail association vice president Matt Benda.

&uot;This agreement allows for the creation of a beautiful, user-friendly corridor between the city and the state park. This project is a huge public benefit for all of Freeborn County,&uot; he said.

The Association’s president, Jerry Hickman, said: &uot;A lot of work has gone into this project by both the private and public sectors. Everyone deserves a pat on the back for their hard work and patience.&uot;

The construction will start between May 15 and June 1. The trail association plans to have a groundbreaking ceremony.
