For years, the brick halls of the Albert Lea City Center have gone unadorned.
But now, the walls will not only be more attractive, but they’ll also be a place for local artists to display their works.
Mayor Jean Eaton came up with the idea for local artists and groups to take turns displaying their works on all three floors of the city center, said Rachelle Fliehman, a member of the Lens and Shutter Photography Club. The club is the first group to exhibit and on Thursday hung their works in the hallways.
&uot;The Lens and Shutter Club wanted more exposure for its efforts, and we thought this was a good idea,&uot; Fliehman said.
The club, which has 21 members, not only hung that many pieces, but also hung framed information plaques for anyone interested in becoming a member. &uot;We’re always looking for new members,&uot; Fliehman said.
The city has installed a gallery rail system from which to hang the paintings. &uot;It’s an excellent system,&uot; said Lens and Shutter President John Eisterhold. &uot;I’m really excited about the opportunity to have the photo club exhibit here.&uot;
Annette Oswald, coordinator of the Albert Lea Art Center, said the exhibits are good not only for the public, but also for local artists. &uot;The art center’s really pleased about getting more art into the community and recognizing local artists’ work,&uot; she said.
The exhibit will stay up through May.
The rest of the year includes exhibits by: Harlan Bang (June and July), Carole Eggum (August and September), Rory Mattson (October), Bob Muschler (November and December) and Beth Tostenson (January and February).
